Hi World!
Artist’s Statement: Art is movement. To me, life is art; or to put it another way, art is life an expression of life and culture. And nature is life itself. I have chosen photography as my medium of art expression, and nature as my primary subject. I have always found nature to be a source of inspiration in my life. Nature is always moving, always changing. I find a great sense of satisfaction when I am making a photograph of nature in any of it’s forms, whether it is a spring flower, the changing colors of fall, or the decaying process of an old barn. I have made photographic printing my career choice, and have always found the print process to be a great source of personal satisfaction, and doubly so when I am printing my own work, Ansel Adams, when comparing photography to music, once said that the negative was like the score and the print was like the performance. I couldn’t agree more.
I was born and raised in New Jersey where I developed an interest, not only in photography, but in the development process. Our annual family vacations usually brought us to the Catskill Mountains in Upstate New York where I developed a keen interest in nature and made it my dream to someday become a landscape photographer.
I began my photographic studies in New York City, later continuing at the Rochester Institute of Technology, in Rochester, New York. While in Rochester, I worked at several photo labs, where I gained skill in the printing process, both black and white and color.
In my early years I came across some copies of the Arizona Highways magazines and became inspired by their colorful large format photographs which very likely inspired me to move out West to California. After about two years in California I decided to start my own color lab, which I named Wolf Color Lab. My lab quickly gained success and became well known in the Hollywood area.
My contact with other photographers made me more aware of places like Yosemite and Olympic National Parks, which I began to visit whenever the opportunity was there. I also traveled to other parts of the country, and always by car, stopping to capture scenes along the way, especially one of my favorite subjects, old barns. I have also traveled to other parts of the world such as Japan, Germany, Austria and France. In 1983 I made a month-long camping trip to Tanzania, East Africa on a safari to photograph wildlife.
Photographing nature in all it's forms has always been a passion for me. One of my biggest influences has been Eliot Porter, whose amazing color photographs of nature and his ability to make the simplest scenes into incredible works of art truly amazed me.
I have been a practicing Nichiren Buddhist for fifty-plus years, which has further inspired my work because of the philosophy's idea that man and his environment are inseparable. His Buddhist mentor, Dr. Daisaku Ikeda is quoted in one of his works, "...the mirror of nature reflects (our) inner world, the essence of humanity and the great, all-embracing expanse of life itself. When we are connected and engaged with nature we are truly alive and vigorous."
